Urion
W. Mackey was elected Commander-in-Chief in 1944 at the 63rd National
Encampment. He traces his Civil War roots to has Grandfather, William
Losure.
William Losure enlisted on September 1, 1861 as a Private in Company
K of the 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He rose to the rank of Sergeant,
and on March 21, 1862, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. William
Losure was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant on September 1, 1863.
He was mustered out in Nicholsville, Kentucky. Later, he belonged
to Grand Army of the Republic Losure Post #35 (Department of Ohio)
in Wauseon, Ohio.
Urion W. Mackey was initiated into the Robert Finch Camp No. 14,
Department of Michigan on October 28, 1933. He held many positions
in the then Grand Rapids-based Camp.
Camp Commander: 1935 and 1936
Treasurer: 1937 and 1938 and 1965 through 1971
Patriotic Instructor: 1939 and 1941 through 1964
Camp Council: 1964 through 1971
U.W. Mackey served as the Michigan Department as Commander in 1941
and later in 1954 as a member of the Department Council.
Urion W. Mackey passed away on May 11, 1971 while serving as a
member of the Camp Council and as the Camp’s Treasurer.
