Michigan Civil War Monuments
During the Civil War Centennial commemoration in 1961-1965, George May of the Michigan Civil War
Centennial Observance Commission compiled a list of Civil War monuments and memorials in Michigan.
It was not as complete a listing of memorials as the SUVCW hopes to accomplish - we estimate over 435 such
memorials exist - but is a valuable survey of the field as of that time. We have scanned in that portion
of the text listing the monuments by county.
As an example of why it is so important that the Civil War Monuments and Memorials Project move forward
is that a number of the memorials on the 1965 list no longer exist. This is due to primarily a lack
of care – first in maintaining the memorial and the secondly in the public’s interest in remembering the Civil War.
